Casino “Eye In The Sky”

April 10th, 2009

If you have been a frequent visitor to a casino over the years, you may have heard of the term “eye in the sky” but have little idea about what it actually is. The term refers to the closed circuit cameras that casinos and other similar establishments have installed–typically on the ceiling–which is how it got the name.

The primary purpose of the “eye in the sky” is to monitor as much of the activity on the casino floor as possible, which is why they are generally installed to provide a clear vantage point of all the tables, seats, corridors, halls and elevators.

These cameras are typically quite sophisticated devices, and in most cases they are capable of extremely high resolutions–enough to read the display on the wristwatch of a casino player. Furthermore, the “eye in the sky” is often covered with a translucent plastic globe, making it difficult for anyone on the casino floor to pinpoint the direction of the camera.
